Impact Research Supplementary Grants

The Institute of Global Value Inquiry (IGVI) is launching a new funding format: Impact Research Supplementary Grants. These grants are intended for researchers based in low- and low-to-middle income countries (see map) who wish to complement an already-funded project in value research with a social impact component. Grant recipients may use the funds to support educational activities related to their research project, and/or to purchase equipment that has a demonstrable positive impact on the communities in which the research is situated.

The main aim of Impact Research Supplementary Grants is to enable researchers to benefit the communities in which their field research is situated, in ways that are not usually covered by traditional research funding formats.

Eligible costs

Eligible costs must fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Implementation of educational events (e.g. workshops, lectures, etc.) aimed at disseminating key research findings among local communities. These events may be organized independently, or in cooperation with state or non-state organizations.
  2. Implementation of other educational dissemination formats not covered under (1.), such as podcasts or films.
  3. Provision of equipment that benefits the local communities where the field research is undertaken. The equipment must be integrally tied to the research project and have a clear public benefit, either for the community as a whole or for a clearly defined subgroup with an elementary need. The equipment may not be used for the profit of individuals or private groups.
  4. Pragmatic emergency assistance in exceptional cases of unmet elementary human needs within the community where the base research project takes place, where such assistance is necessary to ensure the realization of the research project.

Conditions for IGVI Impact Research Supplementary Grants

  • These grants may only be used to supplement existing and separately-funded research projects (funded either by IGVI or by another body).
  • While base research projects may already be underway, proposed impact activities must not have commenced prior to the submission of the application.
  • Impact Research Supplementary Grants may be used exclusively for the eligible costs listed above. They do not include subsistence allowances for researchers, nor do they provide a budget for travel expenses.
  • The purpose of the eligible activities is to promote research by improving the social conditions under which the research is carried out. The purpose is not to provide development assistance in a broader sense.
  • Grant amounts are flexible and depend on the total eligible costs of the proposed impact activities, as decided by the IGVI Impact Grant Commission. The maximum grant amount is € 4,000.
  • The grant timeline may not extend beyond the timeline of the base research project.
  • All eligible expenses must be carefully documented by the grant recipients. Payment of the grants will be tied to concrete expenses listed in the applications.

Application materials

Only individual researchers, not research organizations or groups, may submit applications. Individual applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A CV (max. 5 pages).
  • An outline of the base research project, including its timeline (max. 500 words)
  • A detailed outline of the planned research impact activities, including a cost estimate (and in the case of co-sponsorship: a detailed calculation of the different contributions of different funding bodies) and a timeline indicating how and when the supplementary impact activities will take place, in coordination with the base research project (max. 1000 words).

Application deadlines

  • The application deadlines for IGVI Impact Research Supplementary Grants are the 1st of January, the 1st of May, and the 1st of September each year.
  • Application documents should be sent by email to: info@igvi.org
